The Go to Girl

The Go To Girls Blog & Facebook…….

If you know me you will know one of the things I don’t do is Facebook. I have over the years dipped my toe in and out of Facebook but was not really happy reading about what people had for dinner or what they were wearing.

So as times move on I realised it may be a good tool for building my brand. I am slightly uneasy about my decision and wanted to ask people who read my blog if they can offer any advice. I opened my page and added one for #thegotogirlsblog and have received quite a few friend requests. I have so many questions about Facebook.

If I write them in my blog would anyone offer up any answers, advice or insights so here goes?
1. What is the purpose of Facebook?
2. Is it to friend people you know or make new friends?
3. Why am I getting so many friend requests from strangers?
4. Why is there no icon to follow people I know?
5. Am I somehow on a hacked Facebook?
6. I tried to follow people I did not know and have been put in Facebook “jail”! I did not know I was doing anything wrong as I am a blogger and was reaching out to other bloggers as I do on Twitter and Instagram. Does anyone know why, for how long or how I get my account back?
7. I have now opened a new account but cannot follow people I know and have lots of requests from people I don’t know?
8. Seems a bit backward!? Does anyone have any useful advice, please?
9. Will Facebook help me promote my brand.
10. Does anyone have any stories for or against using Facebook?
I really need your help on this one. Please comment as much info as you can.
Loving being me, let’s see if I will love being on Facebook.
Are you on Facebook??
Thanks for reading & really hoping you can help.

  1. Facebook is for friending people you know irl whether friends, family or acquaintances. You can friend people you don’t know but it may come across as weird and you may find that people will block you and attempts to send future requests. You likely got enough of those why you ended up in FB jail. As for growing and building your brand, you can get excellent exposure in facebook groups and from your page as your likes/follows grow. You can also use FB to run ads on Fb+IG to promote a post or attract likes, whichever you prefer.

  2. Seriously? Stay away! I closed my Facebook account a few months ago now, and guess what? I’m still alive, still breathing, and most of all, back IN CONTROL. The first thing to ask is, will you use it? Because if you don’t; if you are not there every day pootling away time on the personal peccadillos of people whose friendship is VERY conditional, third parties horn in and try to use your space for their own adverttising. I can’t think of it as a good advertising medium, or even as good media. No, no, no!

  3. I have a personal page and horse addict page. As the horse page is a business page I can ban commenters who are too negative and i an control things better
I used to share my horse posts on my personal page but no longer do that. For some of the blog posts that I share to FB I get a big response. So it is worth doing

      1. I just set up the page and in the process you can choose what you want it to be. So I chose personal blog. It isn’t hard to do. It is basically setting up a new Facebook account.

  4. I personally agree with Fred Bailey. I detest, despise FB. Why am I going to be where I am constantly harassed asking me questions about my personal life, income, school, family?! That’s what FB does. Then, even if I do not accept “friends” or contacts, I am offended by the videos and pages that FB promotes. Videos that are really disgusting, sad and dirty. No, I do not life FB. I think that it is a horrible social media outlet, and so it is Twitter. They have become cesspools. Now, FB thinks they can police you and ban you whenever they want and request a “valid I.D.” from you?! Why? I don´t trust FB. Also I notice that people in FB become weird if they spend a lot of time in it. For example: I’ve known people who where normal eaters, now since they are FB addicts they became vegan, or obsessive animal rescuers, they are constantly in these FB “causes” fighting with others, and even in real life if you, as their friend or relative do not want to be vegan or be active in their “FB causes” then they judge you and criticize you. They do not respect your freedom in real life, but they are all into this “Freedom of speech” in FB. It’s like a new disease they have ( i am not a psychiatrist) these people: dissociation with reality, maybe?
I used to LOVE forums, I still do and go there. They are more fun because you can talk to the forum subscribers and still maintain your privacy if you want. It is up to you. KInd of like blogging. I so much prefer blogging and try to create conversation with others.
PROMOTING YOUR BLOG: FB is not good unless you pay a lot of money and why am I going to pay to a platform that has gone down the toilet and exposes to me photos, videos and pages I don´t want to see?
Good luck with your blog. I hope you accomplish everything you want. Cheers.

  5. After my personal experience with Face Book (aka in my regard as Ass Book) I have a very low opinion of all social media and truly believe we are helping give “Big Brother” access to our personal information. I don’t understand how people who are afraid of identity theft go to social media and give it all away. I also do not have 7500 friends as Face Book alleged nor am I interested in photos of a neighbour’s child eating cake when I don’t know the “friend” who’s sending me the photo. I’m afraid I don’t say “Baa” very well and will never subscribe to any social media again. Whatever happened to the fine art of exchanging letters with people we really cared about?

  6. Just be sure that you review your security settings and you agree with them. I have noticed that many of my friends have left FB through the years. It’s sun seems to be setting. Will it rise another day? Who knows.

  7. I’ve been on Facebook for several years, and I use it to stay in touch with old friends and with family members who don’t live near me. I NEVER accept friend requests from people I don’t know. Even if I think I might have known them in the past I check out their profile first. Just today I got a friend request from someone who had a recognizable name, but the photo wasn’t familiar. I checked out his profile and am fairly certain he was a scammer. If you want to follow someone you know, go to their Facebook profile page, and you can send a friend request from there. They have the option of accepting, ignoring, or rejecting your request. I don’t know why you got put in Facebook jail. My aunt, who has a lovely blog here on WordPress, was completely blocked from sharing her blog posts on Facebook. I tried to help her resolve that, but we never did get an answer to what the problem was. She had to create a new blog, and now she can share those posts. Facebook can be very aggravating, Periodically they change their algorithm so that your “newsfeed” shows fewer posts by friends or more posts by friends or whatever the heck Facebook wants to do. I often threaten to leave Facebook entirely, but I do use it to stay in touch with my cousins and my aunt who are scattered all over the U.S. and in France. Facebook also is good to use for sending private messages to people, especially if you don’t have their email address or can’t send a text message.

  8. 1. What is the purpose of Facebook?
FB is for friends and friends of friends, it’s not the same as Twitter in my experience and the FB police prob thought you were a public nuisance trying to friend lots of ppl in a short space of time – one or two may have ticked the not known by me box.
    2. Is it to friend people you know or make new friends?
A little of both but mostly as a friends and acquaintances.
    3. Why am I getting so many friend requests from strangers?
Weird spammy hacky rubbish. It happened to me when I started Twitter. Reject them.
    4. Why is there no icon to follow people I know?
You send friend requests on a normal FB but if you’ve set up a FB page, you can be ‘liked’ and ‘followed’ and your page will appear in ppl’s FB feed if they like or follow you.
    5. Am I somehow on a hacked Facebook?
    Don’t know.
    6. I tried to follow people I did not know and have been put in Facebook “jail”! I did not know I was doing anything wrong as I am a blogger and was reaching out to other bloggers as I do on Twitter and Instagram. Does anyone know why, for how long or how I get my account back?
Join a blogging group and you can share your page with like-minded ppl.
    7. I have now opened a new account but cannot follow people I know and have lots of requests from people I don’t know?
    8. Seems a bit backwards !? Does any one have any useful advice please.
    9. Will Facebook help me promote my brand.
It’s a little slow. I use an old account of mine to promote and have a FB page on my personal account
    https://www.facebook.com/HistorianRuby/
DIfferent types of blogs have different experiences and I have a niche blog, lifestyle blogs (to me) appear more popular. Look for me and see if my ‘page’ is different or the same as yours. I think you have just set up an account???
    10. Does anyone have any stories for or against using Facebook?
Don’t get caught out promoting your page (if you have one) I had great figures after linking Insta with my page but it turns out I’d accidently ‘promoted’ my page for 3 days. I was billed (under £20) but I was miffed. I’ve since switched the ad function off.

  9. I did not do TH for a long, long time either, but I eventually got on board. There are a lot of things I 👍 about it and a lot of things I hate about it. But, that is how most people communicate today. I use it primarily just for my blog now. It really helps promote your blog. Hope that helps.😉

      1. A couple of ways actually. I created a FB page, (and pay for advertising of that page on the FB), so it reaches a lot more people. I also send it out to all my FB friends, and it goes to them, and if if they like it, some often share it with their friends. So you get more recognition and notice for your blog.
